Bumps & Bruises

Pinks, reds, and purples...no, I'm not still talking about Valentine's Day. I'm referring to mine and Lilly's clumsy day, complete with battle wounds. Today was just bad, where injuries are concerned. I must have set a bad example for Lilly when she saw me hurt myself. Here's the story...

I've been noticing that our house is starting to smell too much like kitties, despite my many air freshener plug-ins. My theory was that it was because the kitty litter boxes haven't been completely emptied and filled with brand new litter since we moved in. Today was the day that I decided to tackle that disgusting task. Everything was going smoothly until I tripped over the baby gate that blocks the laundry room. Despite my best efforts, I took the gate down with me and landed on my wrists. It definitely didn't feel good. I just laid in the hallway while Lilly stared on. Thankfully I didn't seriously hurt anything. Trust me, those metal bars on the baby gate could have caused lots-o-damage had I landed on them wrong. The only injury I found was a huge bruise on my arm. I've had worse, so I just let it go.

The day was continuing on without anymore spills from mommy. I decided to sit on the couch and fold laundry, while Lilly explored the living room. She made her way to the sliding door/window, where she pounded and sucked on the glass. I thought to myself "hmm, if she falls, she could really hurt herself if she hit her head on the track where the door slides." Shoulda listened to the voice in my head, because that's exactly what she did. Thank goodness it wasn't worse. She honestly could have ripped open her head. Trust me, I know. I did something very similar when I was little, and I still have the scar and missing part of an eyebrow to prove it. Anyway, I rushed her into the kitchen to assess the damage and get some ice on it. Of course, she was hysterical and didn't want the ice anywhere near her. I was able to calm her down eventually, and remembered that I still had a cute lady bug gel ice pack that my mom gave me. I pulled it out and forced it on her. She threw a fit after a few minutes and ended up taking it from me so that she could chew on it.

I went back to my original ice-in-towel trick and tried quick bursts. The swelling went down, but man is there going to be a good bruise. I'm giving her the temporary nickname of Scarface until the big, red line goes away. Poor thing. I feel like such a bad mommy. I knew she shouldn't have been playing there, but I didn't act. Question. Is there something I can buy to baby proof that track?

This is Lilly's version of Scarface. This was the scariest picture that I could find of her.

Right after the fall. You can see how close she was to cutting right above her eyebrow.

She's still one very cute and very happy baby.

Yes, I realize you all probably don't need to see every pore on my face, but this is the scar that I have from running into the corner of a wall when I was 2. It's kind of hard to see, but it's about an inch and a half long and goes into my eyebrow (causing it to be misshapen). If a wall could rip open my face, think about what that metal track could have done to Lilly's head!!
