Lilly Lynn Goodrich was born at 6:47 AM on May 8th. She weighed 8 lbs, 4 ounces, and was 19 1/2 inches long.
Today was a day that daddy and I thought would never come. We spent weeks leading up to this moment discussing names, mainly boy names because a girl's name was way easy. Granny B lent us her video camera so that we could document this exciting day. And boy am I glad we did! What felt like forever in coming, passed in just a few short minutes. You were stubborn, like me, but eventually decided to let us know whether to buy pink or blue. After lots of prodding by the ultrasound technician, and a few minutes of jumping up and down to get you to change position, you finally opened your tiny legs. The moment when the woman said "Okay, here it is...it's a..." was completely slow motion. I'll never forget it. I wanted so badly to hear the word "girl," and was taken by surprise when that's exactly what I heard. IT'S A GIRL! I was overcome with excitement and emotion. I wanted to stop and sob, and thank the Lord for blessing us with such an amazing gift. This has truly been a day that we will never forget.
When Daddy Met Baby (October 12, 2011)
It felt like the appointment had been forever in coming. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I was obviously quite anxious. When the nurse was taking your mother's vitals, I'll admit to getting somewhat nauseated. But that quickly left before I embarrassed myself too much. I was there by your mother's side throughout the appointment as we attempted to be nonchalant with the doctor. I think we found a good doctor, because she made the whole thing less than incredibly uncomfortable. When the doctor finally brought up your ultrasound, I got to see you for the first time. I couldn't make much out of the fuzziness of the image, but there was one thing I could see with absolute clarity: your heartbeat. It felt surreal knowing that you truly were there, preparing to enter the world. I knew then with an absolute surety that I was to be a father. Now we just have to wait several months to know whether to call you a boy or a girl!
Mommy's ups and downs of pregnancy:
Like I said earlier, you made me very sick, very quickly. Food was once my favorite thing in the world, and it suddenly became my most hated enemy. Nothing sounded good. There were a few things that made my stomach flip (let's see if I can list them without getting sick): Greek yogurt, rotisserie chicken, mixed greens salad, most meat...getting kind of nauseous....Very few things actually sounded appealing: Bajio chimichangas (considering I couldn't eat the salad anymore), french fries & fry sauce (ketchup suddenly became a no-no), Chinese food, chocolate, French toast, eggs, and grilled ham & cheese sandwiches. Now my tummy is confused. I can't wait for the day that I can regain my love of food and can watch cooking shows without running to the bathroom to get sick. Poor daddy had to put up with my getting sick all the time. There's only so much shoulder rubbing that you can do in that circumstance. But he was always really supportive in running to get me water or whatever it was that actually sounded good. One of my favorite things was learning about your development each week. I downloaded an app for my iPod, that told me your size and how you were growing. I remember telling daddy one week that you were the size of a raspberry. That night, while rubbing my tummy, he called you his "raspbaby". Ever since then, everything has been "raspbaby this" and "raspbaby that". It's a fitting nickname, I think. We often talk about what we will call you other than the raspbaby. If you're a girl, we have the perfect name picked out. A beautiful mix to honor Grandma Griffin and Grandpa Goodrich. If you're a boy, we are completely up in the air. Granny B (mommy's mom) picked out a name that honor's my family and your daddy, but I'm not sure if I'm in love with it. Of course, everyone else is, so I may have to throw it around a bit to get used to it. Waiting 5 whole months to find out your gender is going to kill us. But it will totally be worth it.
(From Daddy)
My Little Angel,
I am your father and you are my joy. I have never thought myself prepared for the role of father, so soon we shall see if I am up to the test. I don’t know much about you other than you have half of my DNA. I know that you have a part of me in you and that when you’re born, you will possess some of my traits. I am confident they will be my better traits, for you are meant to become so much more than I ever could.
Certainly such is every father’s dream to see their child become more than they ever could. Maybe you’ll have my personality. I doubt your mother would like that much. Maybe you’ll have your mother’s eyes, her smile. Hopefully you won’t have my hair. Maybe you’ll be a geek like me, or an actual athlete who doesn’t get winded walking up a set of stairs. Whatever the case, you will be the creation of our Heavenly Father. Times were difficult for me growing up in the world today, but I can only imagine the trials you will face in the years to come. But you are a Child of God, and you have been prepared for this moment in life. I don’t know how the world will affect you as you grow. I can only hope that, as your father, I will be able to protect you from anything and anyone who would threaten your happiness.
Know that I love you so much, and yet you have not even drawn your first breath. I pray that when you do draw first breath and see the world around you, that you may know how very much I love you. Your Heavenly Father loves you just as much, and He knows so much more about you than I. I can only look forward to knowing you as He does and watching you as you become an adult.
There are so many things I want to tell you about and remember: the day we found out you were going to be born, the day I first heard your heart beating… The magic of knowing that you really are here and alive is beyond words. I want to tell you about how we spent weeks in agony waiting to tell your grandparents. I want to tell you about how we picked your name. I want to tell you about the changes you’ve caused in me.
I want to tell you about how you were conceived out of so much joy between me and your mother. I want to tell you how much we have loved you since that day. And soon, I hope, I will want to tell you about how you were born. I love you and I look forward to finally meeting you.
Your Father
Mommy's Little Kicker,
I am your mommy! Daddy and I have decided to document this very exciting new journey that we get to go on: being your parents!!! We found out on September 4th that I was pregnant with you. Mommy's jaw dropped and Daddy looked terrified when the pregnancy test came out positive, but it's what we worked for and it's what we wanted, so that shock quickly turned into excitement. We kept you a secret for a long time so that we could surprise your grandparents. I think it was worth it. You made me very sick, very quickly. You must really like chocolate and Chinese food, because that's all I ever wanted to eat.
We were so excited to see you for the first time on October 12th. I'm excited to feel you grow inside of me. Most of all, we're excited to meet you in May. You are due on the 2 year anniversary of when mommy and daddy first met. I cried when I found out your due date. It will be such a special day for so many reasons. I find myself wondering about you a lot. Will you be a girl? And if so, will you love pink like your mommy? Or will you be a boy, and love computer games like daddy and Notre Dame like mommy? Will you look like mommy or daddy? Either way, you're going to be an adorable baby.
Sometimes I wonder what it will be like to hold you and just stare at you for hours. I know you’ll be so perfect that I won’t be able to take my eyes off of you. I can’t wait for that day. You are going to change me, in a good way.
I wanted you to know that I think about you often, and I pray for you too. I pray that I will be a good mom to you someday, and that Ryan will be a good dad. I pray that you will always see the love that we have for each other, and the love that we have for you. Until then, your dad and I will be enjoying this time to ourselves. We are seeking out adventures, laughing a lot, and learning lessons we need to learn before you get here. We are very much in love and can’t wait to meet you someday. Know that you are already loved.
Love, Mommy
